This week features are all about caterpillar and butterfly activities for the kiddos! The activities can be spread over a week so children are not bored.
Butterflies have fascinating life-cycles and that is why they are perfect for teaching kids about wonders of nature and transformations in our environment. Use this caterpillar and butterflies preschool theme to teach concepts to your preschooler.
1. Monday Activity – Butterfly life cycle: The stages of a butterfly life cycle are called metamorphosis, which means change. Take a moment to show the kids stages from egg to larva which is a caterpillar, from caterpillar to a chrysalis where it then grows into a beautiful butterfly.
2. Tuesday Activity – Story: “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”
Read the story aloud to your little one. Talk to them about how healthy the caterpillar grew when eating healthy (Strawberries, Plums, Oranges, Apples, Pears) and how the caterpillar eats his way through cherry pie and sausage until he is large and has an upset stomach. Are those sorts of things healthy for a butterfly? Are they healthy for us to eat?
3. Wednesday Activity – Butterfly jigsaw puzzle online:
Here is a fun online jigsaw puzzle of a caterpillar and butterfly. The default puzzle is six pieces. Adjust the number and shape of pieces clicking on the change cut button.

4. Thursday Activity – Hungry caterpillar DIY craft:
Here’s what you need:
-wide craft stick
-5 green pom poms and 1 red one
-2 googly eyes
-2 small pieces of pipe cleaner
-glue
This craft is very simple…even easy enough for toddlers! First, place glue on the craft stick. Then stick on the pom poms, with the red one on the end. I ended up using a hot glue gun later to make sure it stayed secure. Then, glue on the googly eyes and pipe cleaner for the antennae.
5. Friday Activity – Matching Game
Materials: caterpillar and butterfly stickers; cards
Make pairs of cards with matching stickers on them and laminate. The children can use these as a concentration/memory game or as a matching game.
