Love Towards Books Starts with Preschool

It is believed that love for reading is a stepping stone for becoming an enthusiastic learner, a confident reader, writer. When we read books we learn new words, that enrich our vocabulary, we gain knowledge about our surroundings, people and their culture, nature, and history. Books inspire us. They open our minds, to different views of life and feeds our imagination. We all have moments when we feel our life is grey and boring, and in those moments books can be a perfect companion! They take us to another world.

It has been seen that Preschools in Mumbai set a time aside for reading in leisure, the children develop an intrinsic love for reading and books. In fact for these children reading books becomes a way of life.

The sociologists found out that an average person spends a fifth of his or her waking time reading. In the last decades, this amount of time has decreased drastically, especially among adults. Nevertheless, the importance of reading continues to be the same ‒ even though we live in the ‘Computer age.’ The modern society needs people who not only read print material or books but understand the importance of reading so that they can inculcate the love of books in our future generations.

It is very important to choose the right approach to making young children love reading. It is our responsibility ‒ we can make them fall in love with books for the rest of their lives.

Adults reading to children regularly, whether at home or at the daycare or Preschool is the best way to lay the foundation for reading in children. For parents, these reading sessions are an ideal way of spending quality time with their children and demonstrating in a subtle way the importance of books.

A child who feels warm and safe during reading wants to re-experience these moments and will develop an interest in reading ‒ at first the interest in reading together with other preschool children, family members and later interest in individual reading.

In summary, one could say that books not only help to develop a child’s language and imagination but also develops their concentration, patience, and creativity.

Hence at The Courtyard, it is our responsibility to provide opportunities to our young ones so that they feel that reading is essential and thereby becomes woven into the fabric of their lives.
