Building your child’s first library

From a very early age, enjoying books and reading stories is crucial in the development of children. Books help with their ability to understand words, use their imagination and develop their speech, as well as being something they really enjoy.

Here are a few types of books you can start with, which can be a step towards building good reading habits in children:

Board Books

They are for ages 0 to 3 and are designed as such. Infants tend to chew, dribble on, and throw down objects, so the pages of board books are made of thick paperboard with a glossy finish to withstand the wear and tear. Small in size, they are used to teach early learning concepts, like the alphabet, numbers, or colors.

Illustrated books

For toddlers, illustrated books with interesting pictures, colours and graphics work well. They get attracted to the images. You can use them to explain different things or tell a story.

3D books

These books bring enjoyment to both adults as well as kids. They give children a glimpse into another world, teach them different shapes and inculcate a wider appreciation for art.

Pop up books

Pup books are an excellent choice for reluctant readers who need a little incentive to become book lovers. And they are also a great choice for kids who already look forward to reading their bedtime books.

Peek-a-boo books

They are fun books for young children. Guess what is hiding behind each themed object in this bright, colorful book. Crisp photo illustrations and simple text will keep the young readers engaged.

Touch & feel books

Toddlers learn not just through reading but also by experiencing. Touch and feel books allow young children to explore and experience through their sense of touch as well as their sense of sight and hearing when being read to.

Teachers, along with parents, play a vital role in encouraging reading and developing literacy skills in young children. Remember to be a reading role model to your child – if your child sees you enjoying a book, they will show an interest too.
