A mom’s lifeline – The ubiquitous yet elusive Maid

The state of working women or stay at home moms has been declared, debunked and debated since a long time. The surveys, headlines or statistics behind them, however, don’t reveal the whole story.  Fact is, many women today are breadwinners and are struggling to keep a pace between professional  and personal life. They are caught in a perfect storm of male-dominated culture at work, traditional social norms at home, and outdated schedules in the schools.

The only survival strategy is to have maids for managing the daily chores – cleaning, cooking, running errands and managing kids if there is no other childcare support.  Only a woman can understand the feeling of dread and panic that comes with the maid’s phone call, informing she will be skipping work today. It can ruin a woman’s morning and at times the entire day can go for a toss. The despair is magnified if last night you let the dishes lie and procrastinated cleaning up, believing the maid will handle it.
Maids have become the lifeline for both working women and a stay at home mom. Indian middle-class professionals can afford an army of household help in the form of cooks, maids, nannies, drivers to support them. But woes doesn’t stop here. No matter how good a maid you get and however much you pay, suddenly they will walk away without looking back. You always need to be prepared for such challenges.
