Chandrayaan 2 – What your Kids should know?

Do you remember your childhood, seeing the stars of sky? Kids are always enthralled by everything  in the  sky, the shining stars, moon, clouds, and  specially planes, rockets, spaceships etc. While the whole country is talking about India’s ambitious space project Chandrayaan-2, it’s a fuel to your kids’ curiosity. The entire mission gives an ideal opportunity for parents to teach their kids about India’s remarkable initiative. Parents can also explain the mysteries and wonders of outer space.

What kids should know about India’s mission to the moon ?

  1. Chandrayaan-2 , is an ambitious first-ever mission planned that lands a lunar rover near the moon’s south pole. India will be the first country ever to have ventured to the south pole of the moon!
  2. The lander of Chandrayaan-2 is named Vikram after Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai, the Father of Indian space program.
  3. The Chandrayaan- 2 lunar rover has been named Pragyan. It weighs about 27 kilos and will operate on solar power. It operates on six wheels and will traverse a distance of 300 to 400m on the lunar surface.
  4. The life of the rover is about 14 Earth days (1 lunar day) and it will be able to travel half a kilometre on the surface of the moon. It will move at the rate of 1 cm per second.
  5. Chandrayaan- 2 mission was signed over a decade ago, between the Russian Federal Agency (Roscosmos) and ISRO. However, after the Fobos-Grunt mission to Mars, Roscosmos withdrew from the project as they had used identical technical schematics in other lunar projects.
  6. India planned to soft-land on the moon, after United States of America, Russia and China.

The mission is to provide a lot of new information about the moon and provide substantial proof of the existence of water ice. Other aspects like mapping specific parts of the lunar surface and the study of the atmosphere will also be carried out.

Though, ISRO has lost the communication with Chandrayaan-2 but they have located the lander on the Lunar surface. We have 14 days of time to connect with Vikram and take a look at unopened page of moon.

The hope is still ON, as Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam said, “End is not the end. END means, Effort Never Dies.”
