How to Incorporate Story-Telling in your Child’s Daily Routine

Once upon a time… is a phrase that can get a lot of eyeballs. It is perhaps one of the best ways to teach things to kids. Let’s face it even we as adults love a good story, for kids it is one of the effective tools for learning and development. According to research, the story helps to create empathy and emotional quotient in a child.

Here is some way to incorporate storytelling into your child’s routine:

1. Make it a routine activity

Try to read at least one short story to your toddler every day. Setting a designated place to do the same can be helpful. A reading chair where you both are comfortable can help your child to associate story-time with the same.

2. A quiet place

Turn off the TV or radio, put your phone on silent, and find a quiet place to read so your child can hear your voice. There should not be any kind of distractions during story time.

3. Make it fun

Hold your child close or on your knee while you read, so your child can see your face and the book. Try out funny noises and sounds – play and have fun! For your child to completely immerse in the process, make your narrations as dramatic as possible.

4. Read the pictures

Encourage your child to read the pictures, ask them questions, and let them share what they feel about the same. This will help in the enhancement of their vocabulary and communication skills.

5. Give them a choice

Once they get into the habit of story-time and they start enjoying it, give them the opportunity to choose the book they want to read. This will not only build their confidence level but also create a sense of independence within them.

Start slow with short stories that have limited text and colourful pictures. Make it a wholesome experience for your child.
