5 Post Pregnancy Fitness Tips which work, from new mom Kareena Kapoor

It’s a few weeks after delivery, and you’re itching to get back your pre-baby body. Kareena Kapoor Khan during her pregnancy gained 18kgs, courtesy all the ghee and parathas she ate. “And I flaunted it, double chin and all, until the day I walked into the hospital. People said I could eat grilled fish or meat to avoid putting on weight. But I wanted to do it the conventional way, the right way. So I ate it all, but in the right quantities,” said Kareena. She advises new mothers  “The idea is to have faith. And to do it all in a continuous, sustainable way,”

So, here are some tips which Kareena followed and got back in shape just after few month with help from her renowned dietitian Rujuta Divekar.

1. Increase Calcium intake – In one pregnancy, women lose five years of calcium in their body. So getting back into shape also means accelerating the calcium levels in the body. She has been religiously having a tall glass of milk every night. Aside from having large quantities of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), dairy also has short chain fatty acids, These help in the mobilisation of fat from stubborn areas, such as the tummy.

2. Exercise is the way forward – Kareena’s dietitian Rujuta swears by walking. She says that walking is the best exercise in the world. Post pregnancy, when even getting on a treadmill can be tough, 20-30 minutes of walking can really help. And it has helped the actor beautifully. She had stated in an interview how walking with Taimur in her arms for 20 minutes each day was her primary exercise routine right after giving birth. The actress also vouches for yoga.

3. Pay attention to what you’re eating – During her pregnancy, Kareena chose the traditional Indian ‘New Mother Diet’, which basically consists of calories, calories and more calories. “I wanted to do it the conventional way, the right way. So I ate it all, but in the right quantities.”

4. Opt for an Indian diet: Kareena had foods rich in iron such as jaggery and coconut laddoo, till ki chikki, khichdi, till and gud (jaggery) and bajra ki roti and one spoon of ghee everyday in addition to  a glass of milk every night. All these foods have also lend her a glowing skin and are helping her body get its strength back. Instead of trying to follow a crash diet or western diets, new mothers should include desi superfoods.

5. Don’t be in a hurry to get back into shape

Pregnancy is tough, delivery is tougher and the toughest job of your life, motherhood, is just about to start. The extra fat is required for many important tasks such as lactation and protection of both the baby and the mom from infections and illnesses. If you have a long history of fitness and ate right through the pregnancy, then just like the body grew, it will also shrink back naturally. The key here is patience and compassion.
