If you intend to share your bed with your baby, make sure your bed is safe. Otherwise you can make room for a cot so that it fits nicely next to your bed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep a separate cupboard or chest of drawers for your baby&#8217;s nappies, clothes, toiletries and other belongings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Clothing <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>8 undershirts or onesies (mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve)<\/li>\n<li>5 nightgowns (for use until the cord falls off)<\/li>\n<li>8 one-piece stretchy sleepers (go for ones with zippers; new moms swear by them!)<\/li>\n<li>5 pairs of pants<\/li>\n<li>2-3 newborn caps<\/li>\n<li>4 pairs of socks or booties, to wear with nightgowns and outfits<\/li>\n<li>2 pairs of scratch mittens, to keep baby from scratching his face<\/li>\n<li>2 cardigans or jackets, for winter<\/li>\n<li>Bunting bag or snowsuit for winter baby<\/li>\n<li>4 outfits for dressing up (optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Blankets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Babies love to be kept warm in the initial few months.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 large cotton blankets<\/li>\n<li>8 receiving blankets (they also make handy burp cloths)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Feeding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re breastfeeding, you don&#8217;t really need any equipment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are formula feeding<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lots of bibs<\/li>\n<li>Burp cloths<\/li>\n<li>Four-ounce bottles with nipples<\/li>\n<li>Bottle and nipple brush<\/li>\n<li>Formula (be sure to check expiry date and note the lot number in case of recalls)<\/li>\n<li>Thermal bottle carrier<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Diapering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are using re-usable cloth diapers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 dozen cloth or re-usable diapers<\/li>\n<li>3 waterproof covers<\/li>\n<li>1 diaper pail<\/li>\n<li>Changing pad<\/li>\n<li>Baby ointment or other barrier cream to prevent rash<\/li>\n<li>Snaps, Velcro or safety pins to secure re-usable diapers<\/li>\n<li>Disposable wipes or a couple dozen washcloths for cleaning baby&#8217;s bottom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>If you are using disposable diapers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two boxes of newborn-size diapers (it&#8217;s better not to buy too many in advance in case your baby is large or grows quickly)<\/li>\n<li>1 diaper pail<\/li>\n<li>Changing pad<\/li>\n<li>Baby ointment or barrier cream to prevent rash<\/li>\n<li>Disposable wipes or a couple dozen washcloths for cleaning baby&#8217;s bottom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bathtime<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Baby oil for massage<\/li>\n<li>1 plastic infant tub (or use a large dishpan in the sink, or take baby in the bath with you)<\/li>\n<li>Baby soap or cleanser<\/li>\n<li>Baby soft-bristled hair brush<\/li>\n<li>2 soft-hooded towels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nice-to-have items<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Change table (or just use change pad on top of dresser or bed)<\/li>\n<li>Rocking chair for feeding and swaddling<\/li>\n<li>Sling or baby carrier<\/li>\n<li>Diaper bag<\/li>\n<li>1 or 2 change pads<\/li>\n<li>Plastic hangers for closet<\/li>\n<li>Sun shade for car windows<\/li>\n<li>2 or 4 pacifiers (if you choose to use these)<\/li>\n<li>Rattles and other baby toys<\/li>\n<li>Laundry detergent for infants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lastly, it is also a good time to make your home safer for your child.
