When we have cough and cold we usually seek the over the counter drugs but we can\u2019t do the same for infant or babies as it can be life threatening for them.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s always good to consult a pediatrician for cough and cold but there are few home remedies too we can try for our little ones to ensure a fast recovery and reduce their discomfort.<\/p>\n

For babies 0 to 6 months\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Some most Popular remedies –<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Breastmilk<\/u><\/strong> :- This is the wonder drink for infants , as this is loaded with antibodies to build immunity to fight against all types of germs and bacteria. Also keeps your little one hydrated.<\/li>\n
  2. Nasal Saline Drop<\/u><\/strong>:- Pediatrician\u00a0would have prescribed\u00a0pediatric saline drops for infants for little one. Clean the nostrils gently and then to put\u00a0the drops in. Keep the head tilted so that the medicine doesn\u2019t flow out.<\/li>\n
  3. Oil Massage:-<\/u><\/strong> Mustard oil and garlic has anti bacterial properties and warming effect which helps baby to get relieved from congestion. Take about \u00bc cup of mustard oil and heat it. Take one or two garlic cloves. Crush them\u00a0lightly and add them to the mustard oil. Wait for it to turn brown, then\u00a0remove it from the heat. Don’t burn it.<\/li>\n
  4. Sanitizing your and baby\u2019s hands:-<\/u><\/strong> Keep\u00a0baby\u2019s and your hands sanitized\u00a0thoroughly at regular intervals\u00a0with\u00a0antibacterial baby wipes\u00a0or soap<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some Gramdmother’s\u00a0remedies –<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Drumstick leaves hair oil:-\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>The tender green moringa or drumstick leaves are picked. Warm 1\/2 cup of coconut oil in a heavy bottomed wok (kadai) and add a handful of moringa leaves.Once the leaves get wilted oil is ready.<\/li>\n
    2. Turmeric Paste:-\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>Mix turmeric powder with a little water to form paste. Take it in a ladle and heat it. Switch off once warm. Apply the Luke warm turmeric paste on chest, forehead and feet. The heat from the turmeric can absorb the phlegm.<\/li>\n
    3. Camphor:-\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>Heat coconut oil and add little powdered camphor in it. After it has cooled, pour 4 to 5 drops to your palm and apply it evenly over the chest of your little one.<\/li>\n
    4. Garlic and Ajwain Potli:-<\/u><\/strong> Garlic and carom seeds are known for their powerful antibacterial properties. Heat a pan, put crushed garlic and ajwain seeds and\u00a0once cooled make it into a potli or tight pouch. You can do that with the help of a clean\u00a0muslin cloth. Place this potli in the baby cot or cradle where baby sleeps. The garlicky\u00a0ajwain smoke emanating from the potli will help the baby as it helps to open the blocked\u00a0nose and provides relief from congestion.<\/li>\n
    5. E<\/u><\/strong>ucalyptus oil:-\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>The oil can be also be sprinkled in the baby bedding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      For babies 6 months +<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      Most Popular remedies –<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Carrot juice\u00a0:-<\/u><\/strong>Juice extracted from fresh carrots, diluted with boiled cooled water at room temperature can be given to babies of 6 months and above.<\/li>\n
      2. Soups:<\/u>–<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>Add some soups to his diet. Soups are excellent comfort foods during cold and cough. You can provide\u00a0warm\u00a0vegetable soup<\/a>. Tomato and garlic soup also called rasam.<\/li>\n
      3. Steam<\/u><\/strong>:-You can try\u00a0steaming the room using a\u00a0vaporizer<\/a>\u00a0or giving a\u00a0warm shower.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Some Grandmother’s remedies –<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Offering warm water with ajwain or cumin:-\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>Give\u00a0warm water\u00a0at regular intervals to keep the baby well hydrated.Take a glass of water and add \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a small pinch of ajwain, carom or\u00a0cumin\/jeera to it. Wait for the water to boil. Cool the water and \u00a0use it.<\/li>\n
        2. A<\/span>jwain kada:-\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>Kada with ajwain or omam is excellent for cold and cough in babies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Recipe for Ajwain Kada <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          Ingredients<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

          Ajwain or oman \u2013 1 teaspoon<\/p>\n

          Tulsi or basil leaves \u2013 8<\/p>\n

          Dry ginger powder \u2013 1\/2 teaspoon (optional)<\/p>\n

          Clove \u2013 1<\/p>\n

          Black pepper \u2013 5<\/p>\n

          Turmeric \u2013 1\/2 teaspoon<\/p>\n

          Jaggery \u2013 1\/3 cup<\/p>\n

          Water \u2013 1\/2 cup<\/p>\n

          Method<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

          Take all the ingredients in a heavy bottomed vessel and boil for 10 minutes or the quantity \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0reduces \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to 3\/4th. Strain, cool and feed it to your baby. The dosage is 1 teaspoon twice a day after meals. If \u00a0you are giving allopathic cough syrups, do not give this ajwain kada.<\/p>\n
