Child Readiness for Preschool – 10 point checklist <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well,\nthe simple answer is that there is no \u2018Perfect Age\u2019 to begin school. All kids\nare SCHOOL READY at their own pace. So to say, some kids are ready for play\nschool at as early as 18 months while some need to wait till as long as 24 \u2013 30\nmonths. Here is a checklist for you to assess your child\u2019s readiness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the kid <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Is toilet trained up to\nsome extent. Which means if the kid can at least ask for a diaper change\n(through words or actions) post pooping or if the diaper feels wet and heavy?<\/li>
  2. Displays confidence to\ndo activities independently or with some help of a supervisor.<\/li>
  3. Is not in acute phase of\nseparation or stranger anxiety and is able to be away from family for few\nhours.<\/li>
  4. Able to communicate his\n\/her needs like higher, thirst, pain etc <\/li>
  5. Enjoys stories, rhymes,\nmusic etc<\/li>
  6. Shows interest in\nexploring new environment and outdoors.<\/li>
  7. Shows interest in going\nto school looking at other kids his \/ her age.<\/li>
  8. Shows improvement in\nimmunity and catches infections less often as compared to the first year of\ninfancy<\/li>
  9. Is highly energetic and\nyou are unable to channelize the energy in productive ways <\/li>
  10. Is regular with sleep\nand eating habits <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If most of\u00a0 the above mentioned criteria are met, parents should try by starting with lesser duration to let kids settle well in school. Sometimes few kids take longer than others to settle in school. They experience stranger anxiety, separation anxiety, difficulty in pooping or peeing in a new environment, loss in appetite, frequent stomach bugs, bouts of cough and cold etc. Usually all these issues settle down within a week or two, but if not, parents should be more patient and push play-school few months away by either a few more weeks of joint sessions through Parent Toddler programs or letting the kid be at home and doing home activities \/ interventions to build more confidence of the child. Below is a chart that you can refer to check kindergarten readiness of your child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n Knows their ABCs or recognizes\n letters\n <\/td>\n Can control\n  themselves\n <\/td>\n Has small motor coordination – can\n manipulate small objects\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n Identifies shapes\n <\/td>\n Can pay \n attention\n <\/td>\n Has general large motor coordination\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n Identifies colors\n <\/td>\n Controls \n impulses\n <\/td>\n Can take care of their own basic\n needs, e.g., go to the bathroom on own\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n Can count at \n least 10 objects\n <\/td>\n Follows simple\n  directions\n <\/td>\n  \n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n Engages with literature\n <\/td>\n Can solve basic problems\n <\/td>\n  \n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n Can write their own first name\n <\/td>\n Plays well with peers\n <\/td>\n  \n <\/td><\/tr>
