If it\u2019s of any consolation to you, I started with no help and\u00a0a hyper-active toddler in my arms. Predictably, my first few\u00a0attempts were total disasters. But since then, I have managed to\u00a0learn a thing or two, and have managed to churn out a handful of\u00a0decent bakes. (Between you and me, I still have my fair share of\u00a0disasters.) I am sharing a few tips which I have\u00a0gathered along the way. Please take these tips as a guide for the\u00a0techniques that are used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Figure out what you want to bake<\/strong> &#8211; I have a dozen recipes\u00a0swimming in my head every time I want to bake. But zero in on that one\u00a0recipe you want to try. This will help you gather\u00a0ingredients in case you need to buy things like eggs, cream, fruit,\u00a0whole milk etc. Having a recipe in mind and the ingredients for it\u00a0at home is half the preparation done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Printouts<\/strong> &#8211; Take a printout of the recipe(s) you want to try. If\u00a0halving a recipe, halve the ingredients as well and then print it.\u00a0Make note of any conversions, including oven temperature. A baking\u00a0chart is of great help here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Stick to the recipe like super-glue<\/strong> &#8211; Do not try to make\u00a0substitutions and changes to the recipe or procedure. If you want to\u00a0bake an eggless cake better to follow a recipe for eggless cake rather than trying to use a substitute for eggs in another recipe.\u00a0It may or may not work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Room temperature is a key<\/strong> &#8211; All ingredients at room temperature\u00a0unless specified otherwise. Use good quality fresh ingredients for\u00a0best results. Equally important as room-temperature ingredients are\u00a0same temperature ingredients: &#8220;Add hot things to hot things, and cold things to cold things&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Sift dry ingredients<\/strong> &#8211; I like to always sift dry ingredients like\u00a0flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices like cinnamon, cloves\u00a0etc. Sifting aerates the mixture and also helps even distribution of\u00a0salt and leaveners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Choose a proper pan size<\/strong> &#8211; When checking the size, measure from\u00a0inside edge to inside edge. A cake made in a pan that is too large\u00a0can be flat and overbaked, while one made in a pan that is too small\u00a0may overflow during baking or take longer to bake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Leavening<\/strong> &#8211; Baking powder, baking soda, and yeast lose their\u00a0lifting power over time. I buy new baking soda and baking powder\u00a0every 6 months, and toss the old container, just to be on the safe\u00a0side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Parchment paper is your BFF<\/strong> &#8211; Parchment paper helps batter and\u00a0dough bake evenly. It also makes it possible to get brownies and\u00a0cakes clean out of the pan, and stops cookies from spreading out on\u00a0baking sheets. Always line baking sheets, cake pans, and baking dishes with parchment<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Preheat like your life depends on it<\/strong> &#8211; It\u2019s so tempting to\u00a0throw a pan of brownies into the oven before your oven reaches the\u00a0specified temperature\u2026 BUT DON\u2019T DO IT! Baking is chemistry, remember? The temperature will highly effect the outcome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Fixing frosting<\/strong> &#8211; Loose frosting can be fixed by adding extra\u00a0powdered sugar. If your frosting is too thick to spread, slowly stir\u00a0in a spoonful of milk, one at a time, until it reaches the right\u00a0consistency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11.
