ABC of Breastfeeding

Mother’s milk is the best nourishment. Although everyone is aware of the importance of breastfeeding, the responsibility lies with new moms. In addition to a proper diet, new moms have to be mentally prepared that the journey is going to take time before it settles into the routine. The more information you have about nursing your baby, the more confident you’ll feel about it once you begin. An environment where you are relaxed, comfortable and confident is the key to successful breastfeeding for both the mother and the baby.

Start Early

First few hours after baby birth is crucial for breastfeeding. The first milk that comes out is called colostrum. It’s thick and creamy and consists of important substances that protect your baby’s health. Try to use breastfeeding pillows as it will ease the breastfeeding. The more you breastfeed, the more milk you will produce. As your baby needs more milk and nurses more, your breasts respond by making more milk. Experts recommend breastfeeding exclusively (no formula, juice, or water) for 6 months.

Different Breastfeeding Positions

A new mom has to spend several hours each day nursing her baby during the first three months. Initially it is tough to get a comfortable position. Here are a few positions which may help you to have a comfortable breastfeeding session.

The Cradle Hold: Rest in an arm chair and cradle the baby with her head nestled in the crook of your arm, your chest should face hers, with her shoulders and back supported by your forearm and your hand holding her bottom.

Football position. Line your baby’s back along your forearm to hold your baby like a football, supporting his head and neck in your palm. This works best with newborns and small babies.

Side-lying hold. This is an ideal position for nursing in bed especially for nighttime feedings.Use pillows under your head to get comfortable. Lift your breast to the baby’s lips with one hand, and when she opens wide enough, move her toward you and onto the nipple with the other hand.

What Enables a Smooth Breastfeeding Journey

Latching On

Most nursing problems can be avoided if the baby is able to establish a good latch. This may vary. Some babies are able to latch very quickly and then there are some babies who take time to learn the art of a good latching. An incomplete latch means, the mother is likely to feel a pinch and might end up with sore or cracked nipples. If that’s the case, then unlatch and try again.

Get support:

Do not panic, feel confused or hesitant in taking support regarding breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for any problems regarding lactation. Talk to experienced person in family or in friend circle to clear your doubts. These days there also good lactation consultants to help you out.

Good Diet

Experts say that for exclusive breastfeeding, the mother needs around 500 additional calories a day. Hence, focus on whole grains, cereals, legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables. Go for foods that are rich in protein, iron and calcium. And keep yourself hydrated.
